Schubert: Quartet in D minor, Death and the Maiden

Schubert's Death and the Maiden is one of the most beloved pieces of the string quartet repertoire. With its dramatic opening movement, eponymous theme and variations movement based around a setting by Schubert of a poem depicting death reassuring a young girl, sparkling scherzo, and tarantella finale (an Italian folk dance supposed to cure spider bites!), this piece will transport you to a new world.

Robinson College evening concert

JS Bach and Jeremy Thurlow

Beginning with Bach's first Cello Suite, one of his best-loved works, Bach's single line is then recombined in a triple weave in a short and teasing trio, Braid , written by Jeremy Thurlow (world premiere). The concert ends with Jeremy’s meditative Slow Tide for two pianos and ensemble, drawing the whole space of the chapel into an immersive experience of ebb and flow.
